A VPS is the right answer for the majority of growing sites. It stops being the right answer when resource contention, management burden, or density requirements make dedicated hardware or colocation the lower-risk and lower-total-cost option. Measure actual utilization over a few weeks rather than guessing from traffic numbers alone.
Review CPU steal time, memory swapping, disk latency, database response times and peak traffic for at least a representative business cycle.
Profile slow queries, PHP workers and caching before paying for a larger machine.
Confirm backups, restore testing, DNS cutover, rollback procedures and who manages security patches after the move.
